Many seniors worry about forgetfulness and fear it is the first sign of Alzheimer’s Disease, however this is most often not the case. Mild memory loss or forgetfulness can be caused by a variety of treatable conditions. These may include medication side effects, vitamin B12 deficiency, brain tumor or infection, chronic alcoholism, or blood clots in the brain. All these health concerns can cause memory problems, but can be cured under a doctor’s care. If you, or someone you care about, seem to be experiencing memory problems, talk them over with your health care professional. Even if it is more than just natural memory changes due to aging, your health care professional can refer you to specialists who can slow, if not cure, memory loss.

Life expectancy in the United States is changing and old perceptions of the inevitability of disease or problems associated with aging are also changing. Life expectancy is increasing, but along with longer life, people are wanting a longer active life, a long life free of disability. There many ongoing studies on how to counteract the effects of aging. Some of these are anti-oxidant studies, studies of intermittent fasting, and hormone replacement studies. Each of the studies show some promise, but the results are inconclusive as yet. However, it is confirmed that eating fruits and vegetables, the major source of anti-oxidants, is conducive to longer and healthier life. Intermittent fasting studies are inconclusive, but maintaining a healthy weight is a known health benefit and periodic fasting may help maintain a healthy weight. Hormone replacement therapy are valuable in some cases, but their value in healthy aging is as yet unknown and disrupting the body’s delicate hormonal balance can cause problems, so should only be done under a doctor’s supervision. People will always age, but it is hoped that studies will discover how to age with health.

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. It is a progressive disease which currently has no cure. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia among seniors and can range from mild, that has little effect on life style, to severe, where the patient is completely dependent on others for basic care. How fast Alzheimer develops from mild to severe varies from patient to patient. Symptoms of the disease usually start to appear after age 60 and is much less common in younger people. If a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a plan needs to be made for long term care as the disease progresses. It is best to discuss this with the patient before the disease becomes debilitating. Many home health care companies, such as Midas Creek Home Health Care, offer services and counseling on how to cope with Alzheimer’s disease.

As we age, cancer becomes a greater health risk. Though currently medicine can not offer a fool-proof cancer preventative, they can offer guidelines to minimize risk. One of the best ways to reduce cancer risk, is to eat good food. Especially helpful for good health and less chance of cancer, is to eat a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetable. Dark green vegetables are especially healthy as are dark blue or purple fruits. Not only will eating a variety of fruits and vegetables help to reduce cancer risks, they will also help you maintain a healthy weight. To prevent colon cancer, doctors recommend a mostly plant based diet with beans or legumes replacing meat, especially red meat, as a protein source. Whole grains are also a healthier alternative to highly processed carbohydrates in maintaining a healthy diet and life style. Though cancer can not wholly prevented, through a healthy diet cancer risks can be minimized.
